On the 15th of June Urios hosted, as one of the last activities of the 2019-2020 academic year, a webinar on the topic of targeted killings under international law. We were honored that Urios alumnus and former board member Terry Gill was our speaker for this event. Professor Terry Gill is the expert to speak to on this topic. He is Professor of Military Law at the University of Amsterdam and until the 1st of July 2019 also held the Chair of military law at the Netherlands Defence Academy amongst many other activities.
Professor Gill explained the legal basis for these kind of attacks and shedded his light on the most important aspects. These included a definition (as there is no definition of targeted killing in international law), applicable law and the relationship between legal regimes. Having been taught what to look out for regarding targeted killing, Professor Gill ended his lecture by discussing known targeted killings and their legality. The most well know example being the killing of the Iranian general Soleimani by the United States or Osama Bin Laden.
We want to thank the participants for their (digital/online) presence and for asking interesting questions. Because of your questions and active participation some interesting discussions started, in which Professor Gill could participate as well. Lastly, we thank Professor Terry Gill for sharing his knowledge during this lecture, making this an informative afternoon.
