The URIOS Model United Nations Society

Founded in 2007 by Sander van Voorst and Ginney Liu, the URIOS Model United Nations Society (URIOS MUNS) seeks to broaden and deepen an understanding of the United Nations among the students of Utrecht University by providing a preparatory track and a chance to participate as a delegate in real life simulation of the United Nations across the world. Through Model UN, students research international issues in order to role-play ambassadors from UN member states. Participants prepare draft resolutions, negotiate compromises and employ rules of procedure, all in the interest of learning, co-operation and conflict resolution. Urios MUNS also aims to establish a true MUN-society for all students interested in Model UN's and is dedicated to mobilize, educate and inspire students.

2009-2010

What we have done so far

·         Because a good preparation means half of the work the MUN Society started the year participating in the UN month. This took place at the Radboud University in Nijmegen. The UN month consisted in trainings and lectures provided by experts and renowned lecturers in their field and ended with a Model United Nations simulation on the 4^th of December.

·         On the 18^th of January the MUN Society organized a negotiation training. For this we invited G.M.Koekkoek, LLM, MBA.

What we’re going to do

·         Starting March 2010 we’re going to organize a couple of personal development workshops in debating and public speaking. Finally, you will be able to test and extend your extensive personal development through a small simulation of a Model United Nations, where the rules of procedure will be taught as well.

·         April the 26^th the MUN Society will travel to Paris to participate in the Paris International Model United Nations.  There, the following five bodies will be simulated:

Security Council: Border conflict Colmbia-Venezuela
DISEC: Situation in Western Sahara
ECOSOC: water scarcity and climate change
HRC: human rights abuses in Darfur
IMF: recovery and sustainable development in Asia

·         The MUN Society is also planning to participate in TEIMUN (The European International Model United Nations) in July and OxiMUN (Oxford International Model United Nations) in October.
