Urios symposium cybercrime  

On Wednesday, June 2, 2010 Urios, the Utrecht study association for International and European law, organizes its 26^th symposium. This year’s theme is:  

Cybercrime: International and European harmonisation and cooperation in combating cybercrime. 

Billions of people are using the Internet. Due to this large number of users all over the world, it is enormously difficult to control what happens on the Internet. Cybercriminals make abuse of naïve people and faults in systems of companies. What are effective methods to control the Internet and combat cybercriminals? How can the different countries and communities cooperate? Subjects that can be discussed during the symposium are for example identity fraud, bank and credit card fraud, illegal downloading, illegal trade, terrorism and drugs trafficking. 

Speakers who will give, among other things, a lecture are: Prof. mr. H.W.K. Kaspersen, emeritus professor at the VU and old director of the Computer/Law Institute at the VU. He was also the chairman of the expert committee of the Council of Europe which resulted in the cybercrime treaty; Mr. D. Martin from the Cybercrime Institute of Paris; Mr. M. Verhulst, lawyer who works at the legal department of XS4ALL; Mr. D. Molenaar, chief internet safety of the OPTA; Mr. T. Wisman, critics and old employee of ECP.nl and Dr. R. Van der Staaij, expert on fields like privacy, identity fraud, internet fraud and computer criminality. The chairman is Dr. Mr. T. van der Linden-Smith, professor at the UU and she contributes to various websites like internetrecht.startpagina.nl and is one of the editors of the Dutch journal on internet-law. 

During the symposium and at the drinks afterwards, there is a possibility to engage in a discussion with the speakers.

On 19 March 1981 our beautiful study association was founded. Since then Urios has introduced many students to International and European law on a more practical level, in a better and more professional way each year. We are confident that this will continue in the years to come!
