We are proud to present Urios' third and also last symposium of the academic year! After two symposia on the spying by the NSA and the human rights situation in China, we decided to pick another 'hot topic': cannabis, and specifically its legalisation.
Lately, we have seen more and more states legalising cannabis, while others such as the Netherlands stay behind. Why? The Dutch Minister of Justice, Ivo Opstelten, argues that legalisation simply is not possible due to some international treaties concerning drugs. Others, such as academics, lawyers and politicians, argue that the same treaties actually create a possibility to legalise. What is this possibility? Or which provision includes a prohibition to legalise? Why should we legalise? Or why should we not? Would it increase or decrease the international organised crime? Our speakers will answer these questions from their own point of view and experiences.
- Mr Sidney Smeets and Mr Tim Vis, lawyers at Spong Advocaten
- Prof Jan van Dijk, professor of criminology at Tilburg University
- Mr Frans Koopmans, manager Health Care Philosophy and Ethics at De Hoop ggz
