URIOS & UCSA LAWCO SYMPOSIUM // China's human rights issues: a matter for the international community or not? PDF Print E-mail

The labour camps, torture, unfair trials, death penalties, imprisonment because of certain political views, the list goes on and on. We know that these human rights violations in China are there, we talk about them and sometimes see them pop up in the media. But do we know how to 'solve' or approach those issues?

There is not one clear solution and academics are still debating what kind of approach should be used. Should the international community interfere and lay pressure on China? Or are these issues not a matter for the international community at all, and should they be tackled on a more national or local level? On the 23rd of April, our speakers will take up the debate and see what is more favourable!

We are delighted to announce the following speakers:
- Chair: drs. Garrie van Pinxteren, journalist and former China-correspondent
- Cees Flinterman, member of the United Nation's Human Rights Committee in Geneva and honorary professor of Human Rights at Utrecht University and Maastricht University
- prof.dr. Tom Zwart, professor of International and European Law at Utrecht University and director of the School of Human Rights Research - Wenjun Yu, PhD candidate - researching the history of human rights in China
- representative of Amnesty International

Open: 19.00
Start: 19.15
Location: Auditorium, UCU Campus (Campusplein 1, Utrecht)
Entrance: free!
